The core of entrepreneurship lies in relationships between people, whether it be founder to employee, seller to manufacturer, or advertiser to customer. What is interpersonal connection?

Interpersonal connections are formed from relationships between two or more individuals, usually as a result of effective communication and a shared goal or interest. Interpersonal connection takes many forms through communication.

Here are the types of interpersonal connections:

  • Verbal: Using your words to convey a message to another person. It is important to note the tone of voice, which conveys attitude, specific vocabulary or business specific terminology, and speed/diction of speaking.

  • Non-verbal: Using body language and gestures to communicate your feelings towards a subject. Examples include nodding, waving, frowning, etc.

  • Listening: Listening is extremely important, as it shows attention to detail. Using active listening is especially effective, which includes focusing on the speaker and asking questions to clarify the subject.

Interpersonal connection is important because it establishes a relationship between people, allowing further discussion to take place, potentially facilitating new business pathways. Without connections between people, progress stalls and harms entrepreneurship.

Steps to developing interpersonal skills

Entrepreneurship is built on relationships, and having a good grasp of interpersonal skills will help attract and keep customers to your business.

  • Cultivate a charming, friendly personality: Utilize all forms of interpersonal connection (verbal, non-verbal, listening) to create an approachable demeanor. A friendly smile, polite tone of voice, empathetic attitude, and open body language are all imperative for customer communication.

  • Use concise language: Time is money, so cut out the fluff and stick to the important details when communicating!

  • Always follow up: At the end of a conversation, be sure to give out your contact details in order to maintain the interpersonal relationship. You don’t always have to reach out in the future, but it’s good to keep a network of connected individuals.

  • Be aware and alert: Although interpersonal connections involve speaking and communication, it’s important to remember the two-way aspect of conversation. Pay close attention to the other party’s non-verbal cues and utilize active listening. For example, if a customer is frowning, you can adjust your tone or change the subject.
